Steam Train

About This Project

A pair of visitors work together to fuel and drive a steam train successfully down a virtual track.

Visitors operate the exhibit by shoveling simulated ‘coal’ from the tender into the firebox of the steam train. Steam pressure is generated. By using the brake, throttle and steam release lever the train moves along the virtual track, but coal must be added to maintain steam pressure and controls adjusted on the journey before bring the train to a final stop

  • Add fuel to the furnace of a steam engine to create steam pressure and motive power.
  • Regulate train speed via control of the engine’s throttle and brake levers.
  • Add fuel to the furnace at a rate that maintains efficient performance.
  • Maintain optimal pressure within the engine by opening and closing a pressure relief valve.
